By Dr Lau Berraondo, Clinical Director | Enhance

Every summer, I notice the same thing. The diary fills up — weddings, holidays, graduations, family photos, reunions — and people start thinking about the things they’ve been putting off. A tooth they haven’t been happy with for years. Dentures that don’t feel secure. Staining that won’t shift. Or simply a quiet frustration with not feeling confident in photos.

I see it in my clinic every June. And my honest advice is always the same: you probably don’t need as much as you think, and you almost certainly need to start sooner than you think.

The best smile improvements are rarely about perfection. They’re about feeling comfortable being yourself again.

It’s not always about how it looks

One of the things I find myself saying a lot is that dental treatment isn’t purely cosmetic – even when that’s how patients describe it. When someone tells me they’ve stopped smiling in photos, or they avoid certain foods, or they feel self-conscious talking to people, that’s not a vanity issue. That’s quality of life.

The emotional weight of dental problems is something that doesn’t get talked about enough. People carry it for years, often telling themselves it isn’t serious enough to address. In my experience, it always is.

Treatment at Enhance is never one-size-fits-all. Some patients need a full clinical rebuild. Others need a hygienist appointment and whitening. The right answer depends entirely on the person sitting in front of me – not a treatment menu.

When the issue is bigger: implants and full mouth rehabilitation

For some of my patients, the problem has been building for years. Missing teeth. Dental work that’s starting to fail. Dentures that move when they eat or speak. Teeth that have worn down significantly over time. These aren’t problems that whitening will solve – but they are problems I can solve.

My main clinical focus is dental implants, full mouth rehabilitation, and complex restorative work. Implant treatment in particular tends to surprise people. Many patients come to me convinced that implants are out of reach – too complicated, too expensive, too much. Often, I can show them a much clearer path than they expected.

For patients with loose or unstable dentures, implant stabilisation can be genuinely life changing. Even a small number of implants can transform stability, restore biting function, and remove the daily anxiety of dentures moving at the wrong moment. I’ve had patients tell me it’s the single best thing they’ve ever done for themselves.

For others, the focus is rebuilding worn or damaged teeth to restore bite stability, comfort, and long-term oral health. Every case is different, which is why my consultations always start with understanding both the clinical picture and what the patient actually wants from treatment — not just clinically, but in their day-to-day life.

Composite bonding: small changes, real difference

Not everyone needs extensive work. For a lot of patients, composite bonding is exactly the right answer – chipped edges, minor gaps, uneven shapes, small areas of wear. It’s one of the most conservative and effective ways to refresh a smile without touching healthy tooth structure unnecessarily.

What I always tell patients is this: the best cosmetic dentistry shouldn’t look done. It should just look like you – but healthier, more balanced, more like the version of your smile you remember. Subtlety is everything. When it’s right, nobody should be able to point to it.

Whitening and hygiene: underrated, underused

Genuinely, some of the most satisfying outcomes I see are from the simplest treatments. A thorough hygienist clean, airflow polishing, stain removal — followed by professional whitening. Patients are regularly surprised by how much difference it makes. Coffee, tea, red wine, and just the passage of time dulls teeth in ways you stop noticing until they’re addressed.

If you have something coming up this summer — a wedding, a holiday, a big birthday — now is the ideal time to start whitening. Results need a few weeks to settle and look natural, so starting in May or early June puts you in exactly the right place. Leaving it until the week before never produces the same result.

Facial aesthetics: the finishing touches

Confidence isn’t only about teeth, and at Enhance we think about the whole picture. My colleagues Noemi and Sunah offer facial aesthetics treatments focused on subtle, natural-looking results — softening lines, restoring balance, refreshing a tired appearance. Nothing dramatic. The aim is always that you look like yourself, just rested and refreshed.

For many patients, a combination of dental and facial aesthetic treatment produces results that neither could achieve alone. It’s worth having the conversation.

Why timing matters more than you think

Every year I see patients who leave things slightly too late. They book a consultation in July for an August wedding and find that the treatment they actually want – whitening, bonding, implants, a smile makeover – needed more lead time than they had. Some treatments simply cannot be rushed without compromising the result.

Starting the conversation early gives you options. It means decisions aren’t made under pressure. And it means the treatment you want is possible, not just the treatment that fits the remaining time.

Free consultations – no pressure, just honest advice

We’re currently offering free consultations for: dental implants, smile improvements, composite bonding, whitening, denture stabilisation, and facial aesthetics. Come in, tell me what’s been bothering you, and we’ll work out whether there’s something worth doing — and what that actually looks like for you.

No obligation. No pressure. Just an honest conversation.

A final thought

There’s rarely a perfect time to sort something you’ve been putting off. But summer — with its events, its photos, its moments — has a way of making the decision feel more real. If there’s something about your smile that you’ve been quietly unhappy with, I’d genuinely encourage you to start the conversation.

It might be simpler than you think. And it’s almost always worth it.
