Why have composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a completely pain free and very natural looking way to restore a chipped or broken tooth. It can also be used to correct misshapen teeth and brighten discoloured teeth that are affecting the look of your smile.

The composite material is colour matched to your existing teeth for a perfect blend, or can be used in a whiter shade if preferred. It is built directly onto your tooth, and no preparatory treatment, impressions or removal of your tooth structure is needed. When your short treatment is over, your tooth will look as if there was never any damage or discolouration at all.

What does the treatment involve?

Initially, we talk to you about how we will repair and reshape your tooth, or use the composite material to enhance your smile. Your treatment takes place in just one appointment.

We carefully clean and dry your tooth, and apply a special acidic gel to ensure the composite material will bond effectively. We build up the composite on your tooth in layers, gradually achieving the correct shape and appearance.

Using a blue UV light, we harden the composite onto your tooth, and it sets immediately. We then polish your tooth to make sure it blends beautifully into your smile.

Frequently asked questions:

  • The composite bonding on your tooth can last up to ten years if treated well, but this does vary from person to person. If the composite does chip or break, it can be easily repaired or removed.

  • Composite bonding is completely pain free. You won’t feel any discomfort during treatment and there is no need for us to use anaesthetic or any drilling.

  • Looking after your tooth after composite sculpting treatment is easy – simply treat it just as you treat your natural teeth. Make sure you brush and floss twice a day and visit your dentist for regular check ups so they can keep an eye on your restoration.

  • Composite sculpting treatment can definitely change the colour of your teeth. If you are using the treatment to change the overall appearance of your smile, we can apply composite material in your desired shade, which will have a whitening effect when used on all your teeth. You may prefer to consider our other whitening treatment, which we are happy to discuss with you.

  • Yes, as the composite material hardens and sets immediately, you can eat as normal straight away. You may wish to avoid very hard or sticky food for a day or so, or chew on the other side of your mouth, but this is your preference.

  • Yes, absolutely. It is very easy to repair your composite sculpting if it breaks, chips or cracks in just a single short appointment. If we need to perform a larger repair, we remove the old composite and directly replace it with new.

  • No, composite sculpting will not damage your teeth at all. We don’t need to remove any of your natural tooth enamel to accommodate the composite material, so it can be easily taken off and your tooth returned to the way it was before if you decide you no longer want it.
