The most effective way to prevent gum disease

Good dental hygiene is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums and preventing gum disease and decay. We strongly advise our patients to keep up a regular oral hygiene programme with our dental hygienists in conjunction with a daily oral care programme at home to fully benefit from the best in oral health.

Why do I need to visit the hygienist?

Through regular hygiene visits, we can improve and help you maintain your oral and dental health. We provide a gentle and effective approach and will assess and instruct you on the best ways to maintain a healthy mouth, which in turn benefits your whole self and general wellbeing.

Your hygienist is best placed to look after your gum health, removing build ups of stubborn plaque and tartar you can’t reach at home. We also carry out a full assessment of your teeth and gums at every visit, looking for symptoms of gum disease so we can treat it before it gets any worse.

What happens at my hygiene appointment?

We begin your appointment by carrying out a full examination and assessment of your teeth and gums, looking for signs of gingivitis, periodontitis or decay. We may also ask you some questions about your overall general health too.

The main part of your hygiene appointment involves a deep and thorough clean of your teeth. We remove all the stubborn plaque from the hard to reach areas of your mouth before giving your teeth a professional polish to leave them feeling beautifully fresh, clean and sparkling.

If necessary, we may give some tips on how to most effectively keep your teeth and gums clean at home, including how to use interdental brushes to clean between your teeth.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Most patients visit the hygienist every six months, in line with their regular dental examination appointments. This enables us to maintain your good oral hygiene and keep gum disease at bay. Some patients may be advised to have more or less regular hygiene appointments, depending on your level of oral health.

  • Yes, you can visit the hygienist completely separately from the dentist if you wish. We welcome you to book an appointment with the hygienist whenever you would like a professional teeth clean and tailored oral hygiene advice. However, please make sure you are still attending your regular dental check ups, as these are important too.

  • It may seem like you have had whitening treatment following your hygiene appointment, as all the plaque and tartar build ups have been removed, leaving your teeth a lot brighter. We can provide whitening treatment at Enhance Dental, but you will need to see your dentist first to get started.

  • Your hygiene care and deep clean shouldn’t be painful. You may feel some discomfort if you are having a traditional scale clean, but it does not last long. We now also offer air polishing treatment, a completely pain free and highly effective way to clean stubborn plaque using spray technology.
