What are fissure sealants?

Fissures are the thin grooves on the chewing surfaces of teeth. No matter how well they are brushed, bacteria can still collect within them, leading to plaque build up and tooth decay. A fissure sealant is a safe plastic coating applied to the tooth to stop this from happening, and prevent food particles from settling into these hard to clean areas.

Fissure sealants are usually given to children when their permanent teeth are just starting to emerge, which tends to be around 6-7 years of age. They are quick and easy to place, with no need for anaesthetic or drilling to be used.

What does the treatment involve?

Firstly, the tooth is polished to remove plaque and food debris from the fissure surfaces and thoroughly cleaned. We then apply a special solution to prepare it for the sealant.

We ensure your tooth is completely dry before carefully applying the sealant. We use a blue curing light to ensure it is hardened and set straightaway, forming a tough coating.

The process takes just a few minutes per tooth and leaves the tooth protected and safe from unnecessary decay.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Fissure sealants can last successfully for many years. It is important to attend regular check up appointments so your dentist can check your sealants remain intact and are working well. We can also advise you if they need replacing.

  • It is important to keep up with a thorough and effective dental care routine at home to ensure your fissure sealants provide the best protection possible. This should include regular brushing, flossing and eating a healthy diet. The fissure sealant will give your tooth a much smoother surface, and will be easier to keep clean.

  • Although most commonly used for children, adults can also benefit from fissure sealants, particularly those who are especially concerned about preventing cavities and decay. They are great for keeping teeth healthy, no matter your age.
