Are you in need of an emergency dentist in Ely?
You are not alone. As reported in Dentistry magazine, Labour Party data shows almost 5 million people have called the NHS 111 helpline with problems associated with dental health since 2019. Many of those callers’ symptoms were classed as ‘urgent’ by the NHS due to severe dental pain.
Here at Enhance Dental Centre, we urge you not to suffer dental pain. Our practice not only offers emergency dental help to our patients, but we also have a dedicated emergency dental clinic every week for anyone in the community to address dental emergencies promptly and effectively, regardless of their registration status.
What is classed as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is a situation that requires immediate attention to prevent further discomfort or complications. Common dental emergencies include:
- Severe toothache: A persistent, throbbing pain that doesn’t subside with over-the-counter pain relievers.
- Broken or chipped tooth: A tooth that has been partially or completely fractured.
- Knocked-out tooth: A tooth that has been completely dislodged from the socket.
- Abscess: A painful, pus-filled infection in the gums or teeth.
- Severe bleeding from the mouth: Uncontrollable bleeding that cannot be stopped with pressure.
- Object lodged in the tooth: A foreign object stuck between teeth or in a cavity.

Emergency dental care tips: What to do when dental disaster strikes?
Dental emergencies can be painful and stressful. Whether it’s a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or a chipped tooth, knowing what to do can make a big difference in the outcome. Here are some essential tips for handling dental emergencies:
- Stay calm and assess the situation – The first step is to stay calm. Panic can make the situation worse. Once you’ve calmed down, assess the damage. Is there bleeding, pain, or swelling? These symptoms can help you determine the severity of the emergency.
- Control bleeding – If there’s bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or gauze for 15-20 minutes. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, contact us immediately.
- Reinsert a knocked-out tooth – If a tooth has been knocked out, carefully rinse it under cool water. If possible, gently reinsert the tooth into its socket and bite down on a clean cloth to hold it in place. If you can’t reinsert the tooth, place it in a container of milk or saliva to keep it moist. Seek dental attention as soon as possible.
- Chipped tooth – First, rinse your mouth with warm water. If you have any pieces, keep them. A cold compress will help reduce any swelling and you can stop any bleeding with a piece of gauze pressed on the wound.
- Lost filling or crown – Keep the restoration if you still have it. If intact, you can use sugar-free gum to stick it in place. You can also use over-the-counter dental cement (if you have access to it).
- Abscess – If you suspect you are suffering from an abscess, rinse your mouth with warm, salty water and take over-the-counter painkillers. If you develop a high temperature, severe pain, or difficulty breathing, you may have to go to A&E.
- Manage pain – Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or paracetamol can help manage pain. However, avoid aspirin if there’s bleeding, as it can thin the blood.
- Contact your dentist immediately – No matter how minor the dental emergency seems, it’s always best to consult with us. We can provide the appropriate treatment and advice.
- Please remember – Dental emergencies can be serious. Prompt treatment can prevent complications and ensure a positive outcome.
